Peter G. Ledford

John Ledford Sr. married Lucy Thompson in 1744. They had 13 children. This was important because they were farmers and needed the extra physical labor. John was given land by James Patton the captain of the ship he sailed to America on and he was the only brother who was able to keep his land. He ended up selling some of his land to his son Peter G. Ledford.

Peter enlisted in The American Revolution and most of his service was spent in pursuit of a Tory named Thomas Fanning. Peter applied for pension for his service in the army and he was awarded $66.30 in back pay and $26.52 to be pain semi annual payments but back then payments were not delivered to recipients you had to travel to the nearest office to receive the payment. Peter bought and sold a lot of land. He owned land in Cherokee country.

Peter was listed as being married to two women Martha Young and Anne Tucker. I am not sure which name is correct but I believe he was married to a Cherokee Indian at one point in his life. He lead a very colorful life and he and his wife were both buried on Cherokee land. The group Peter was with was covered by a pact with the United States Government and they were not relocated through the Trail of Tears.

These are only a small amount of tidbits from Peter’s life I hope you find as much enjoyment reading about him as I did researching our history.
